Marta Gaggero, La utilización de la inteligencia artificial en las actividades espaciales

DIRITTO E POLITICA DEI TRASPORTI (ISSN 2612-5056), II/2023, p. 135 – 144

Scientists and engineers have created artificial intelligence (AI) systems capable of processing data and information in a way that resembles intelligent behavior. Space technologies increasingly use AI because they are strong systems, resilient and responsive to changing threats. Applications using AI include remote sensing satellites; astronaut assistants; collision avoidance; planetary exploration; and space debris removal. This article examines whether existing international space regulations are sufficient to cover the use of these systems, in particular with respect to liability for damage caused by space objects and the compliance of states with the obligation to monitor and control space objects. The introduction and use of AI systems in space activities entails many advantages but also brings with it certain legal consequences and difficulties that will need to be resolved.
